Functions

The Directorate of Health Services performs the chief function of delivery of primary health care in a wholesome manner. The DHS is also providing health care facilities to the citizens of Andaman and Nicobar Islands through various types of health outlets, spread all over the islands viz. Dispensaries and Health Centres etc. The activities include the establishment and maintenance of health institutions with necessary infrastructure, control of communicable diseases, rendering of Family Welfare services including Maternal and Child Health Services, implementation of National Control / Eradication programmes providing curative services and administration.

This Directorate not only actively participates in delivery of health care facilities but also coordinates with other Govt. and Non Government Organizations for health related activities for the improvement of health of citizens of A&N Islands. DHS is instrumental in coordination and implementation of various national and state health programmes.

 

To cope up with the situation regarding need of health outlets, many more health outlets are being added to existing ones from time to time to meet the health needs subject to the availability of resources. For this, this Directorate is involved in getting land from various level owning agencies and building health centres and hospitals in different remote areas of A&N Islands depending on needs of its citizens and availability of resources. Major Targets proposed in Annual Plan 2015-16

For better administration, A&N Islands is divided into 3 districts, each headed by one Medical Superintendent (MS) who are under administrative control of DHS and the MS are responsible for monitoring the functioning of health centres / dispensaries in their respective Districts.
