Institute of Auxiliary Auxiliary Nursing Midwife Course

The 2 Years Auxiliary Nursing Midwife Course seeks to train candidates to function in the community set up. In the second year the last six months is ‘Internship’ period. Minimum age for admission shall be 17 years on or before 31st December of the year in which the admission is sought. The Maximum age for admission shall be 30 years. Minimum educational qualification: 12 years of schooling(10 + 2years) course recognized by CBSE/ICSE/SSSCE/HSCE or a recognized equivalent examination. For obtaining practical experience in the principles and practice of nursing, students visit G.B.Pant Hospitals and other, Urban Health Centers and Primary Health Centers under the Directorate of Health Services.

Training of Auxiliary Nurse- Midwife started in A & N Islands in the year 1963 December as ANM Training Centre in G.B.Pant Hospital Complex with the intake capacity of 8 -10 students per year. Staffed by only one Sister Tutor till 1979. The duration of Training course was 2 years. Educational qualification is 8 Std. pass. During the period of 1979-82 the course was suspended for want of implementation Multipurpose Health Worker Scheme and to bring into force the revised ANM syllabus 1977 by INC. Meanwhile preparation for establishment of a full fledged ANM training school was under way. Finally the School was reopened on 7th February 1983 with the following facilities-

Facilities

The school is situated at Atlanta Point near Andaman and Nicobar Institute of Medical Sciences having 2 class rooms, 1 demonstration laboratory, 1 Nutrition laboratory,1 Community health ;laboratory, 1 library, 1 room for principal, 1 Staff room, 1 Office room and separate washroom for students and staff.

Teaching Aids

It has LCD projector, portable OHPs, models, charts, skeleton, mannequins/simulators, home visiting bags, delivery kits, slides etc.

Transport

1 mini bus is provided by the Directorate of health services.

Communication

one independent telephone is provided.

Duration of Course

The 1½ years Training of  Multipurpose Health Worker (Female)/ANM started from 1983 and continued till 2011-12.  Educational qualification was 10th std pass.  Consequence on revision of ANM syllabus in 2012  the duration of training has been enhanced from 1½ years to  2 years course and the educational qualification has been enhanced from 10 standard pass to 12 years of schooling (10+2 year) or 12th standard pass from 2012. In the  second year  the last six months is ‘Internship’ period.

Vacation and holidays

students are entitled to 30 days vacation per year and all National and gazetted holidays.

Recognition and Affiliation

The School  has been  granted recognition by the Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi and State Nursing Council i.e;

Tamil Nadu Nurse’s and Midwives Council Chennai in  April 1994. It is inspected by the State Nursing Council every two years.

Examination Board

The annual examination is conducted by the board of examination for Auxiliary Nurse-Midwives, Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

 Principal Secretary (Health) and Director of Health Services being Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Board respectively. The Principal Nursing Officer is the Member Secretary and Convener of the examination Board. 

Hostel

There is a double storied 25 bedded hostel attached to the School near the Directorate of Health Services. There is a mess facility. The students are provided tea, break fast, Lunch, evening tea and Dinner. Mess is being managed by students themselves, which is part of   curriculum in dietary planning, under the supervision of Warden and the Principal. There are certain rules of the hostel which is to be followed by all inmates. These rules are given to them at the time of admission. Reverse osmosis plant has been installed in hostel as well as school to provide safe drinking water.
